Truth and error references

Hi everyone.

As promised here are the quotes and references from the recent ‘Truth and Error’ message preached a few week’s back.  Please view the condensed video or listen to the extended podcast of the message for the context of the quotes.

A Biblical worldview is defined as belief in eight propositions:

  1. Absolute moral truths exist.
  2. The Bible defines moral truth.
  3. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life.
  4. God is the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator of the universe, and He rules it today.
  5. Salvation is a gift from God and cannot be earned.
  6. Satan is real.
  7. Christians have a responsibility to share their faith in Christ with others.
  8. The Bible is accurate in all its teachings.

Today, only 1 in 11 Christians Has a Biblical Worldview

Shane Johnson (Endnote from his book ‘Ice’):
The in-errancy and trustworthiness of the Bible must be the cornerstone of our faith, for it is the one rock to which we moor our witness as we struggle to live in this turbulent, ever-changing world.  Truth is not determined by society, or our feelings, or our opinions, or our desires – truth is truth, and it does not change.  However we feel, whatever our perceptions, there is only one true history of the world, one true manner in which we came to be, and one true answer concerning the nature of God and of salvation.  We must focus upon the Creator, not the Creation, and upon His Word.  That Word is the Bible.  …When it comes to the Holy Scriptures, we must believe none of it – not one verse, not one word – or believe it all, every verse, every word.

Mark Gungor (Recent Facebook update):
“Is homosexuality wrong from a Biblical world view? I believe the answer is “Yes”. “But what if they love each other?” Still wrong, just as two people who commit adultery are wrong, even if they truly love each other. Or a pair of fornicators are wrong doing the “wild thing” in the back of the car while howling at the moon – again, even if they are intensely professing their love for each other as they howl. Human love does not transcend God’s righteousness – ever.”

Anton Szandor LaVey (Founder of the First Satanist Church of America – Excerpt from ‘The Devil’s Handbook – 1992):
“There are television sets in every home, every restaurant, every hotel room, hyb shopping mall—now they’re even small enough to carry in your pocket like electronic rosaries. It is an unquestioned part of everyday life. Kneeling before the cathode ray God, with our TV Guide concordance in hand, we maintain the illusion of choice by flipping channels (chapters and verses). It doesn’t matter what is flashing on the screen—all that’s important is that the TV stays on… What started as an innocent respite from everyday life has become in itself a replacement for real life for millions, a major religion of the masses.”

Joseph Goebbels (Head of Nazi Germany’s Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda):
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the consequences of the lie…  The truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Charles Spurgeon:
“A church that does not exist to reclaim heathenism, to fight evil, to destroy error, to put down falsehood, a church that does not exist to take the side of the poor, to denounce injustice and to hold up righteousness, is a church that has no right to be. Not for yourself, O church, do you exist, any more than Christ existed for Himself.”

2 Timothy 4:3-5 (NLT):
3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths. 5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

Titus 3:9-11 (ESV):
9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

1 Peter 3:15b (ESV):
…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…

 John 14:6 (NLT):
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

 John 8:31-36 (NLT):
31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
